Many of us were hoping to see the 6th Generation Toyota 4Runner roll out in 2023. These dreams fell flat as Toyota confirmed that the 5th Gen will soldier on into next year with no major changes. However, they've softened the blow by releasing a special edition 4Runner that commemorates its 40th anniversary.
Keeping with the '40' theme, Toyota will only manufacture 4,040 of these special anniversary models. Based on the SR5 Premium grade, it's got full time 4WD and some slick red/orange/yellow striping like an old school Toyota racer. Body colors are available in just: White, Barcelona Red Metallic, and Midnight Black Metallic.
With a serial numbered 40th anniversary badge on the dashboard, the floor mats, and embossed into the seats, Toyota makes sure you don't forget that there have been 40 years of 4Runner. Additional extra touches are the 17-inch bronze rims, bronze interior stitching, and even another "40th" plate on the tailgate.
For the non-anniversary 2023 4Runners, not much has changed since last year. The only notable change was to make rear cross-traffic alerts & blind-spot monitoring standard across all trims. The same lineup is available; the SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro. The 270 horsepower 4.0-liter V6 engine you know and love is still powering the 2023 model. We were hoping for a more powerful engine option this year, but we'll have to wait to see what comes in the future. Will they release a hybrid option? Perhaps a turbo 6?
Pricing has not been released, but will likely be a small bump up from 2022 prices. Our 5th Gen 4Runner Overland Parts & Accessories should be compatible with the 2023 model, but we'll give em all a test fit just in case. Maybe we'll get our hands on one of these 40th anniversary bangers?
